Pastor Joseph Offers Overview of Work in India

Graduation Ceremony at KSOM - March 2010
Graduation Ceremony at KSOM - March 2010

We do thank God for His great help to run this ministry during difficult times. All our churches and Pastors are men and women who are firmly founded on the Word of God. The Koinonia Church in India is continually being prepared to serve within and outside the church.

Planting churches is the very core of our vision. The Bible College (KSOM) is preparing young men and women for just such ministry. The graduates each year have gone to their local areas and planted new churches with just a few families. By sending young men into various parts of northern India, we have continued to plant 4 or 5 churches every year. We continue to look to the Lord to support our church planting efforts in the early years as these men become self-supporting. Each Pastor can use $100.00 initially per month as he establishes the Lord’s work in a given area.

The church in Pune continues to grow, and many are dedicating their lives to serve the Lord mightily. Pastor Dipak Samuel will be serving in the Pastoral capacity at the Pune Church. The church continues to prepare teams for praise and worship. We are so thankful for the guitar that was sent with Pastor Ray earlier this year. We could use more guitars and a good sound system, and we covet your prayers in this area.

We now have 80 churches (the number is still growing) in 18 different states of Northern and Western India. We are in villages, towns, and cities. Most of our congregations do not have their own church building. We desire to help construct two or three church buildings every year. We have asked all pastors to get a piece of land where possible, and we will prayerfully ask the Lord to raise the necessary funds to construct a church building.

Please pray for these churches which are in the final process of completing documentation for land:
* Koinonia Fellowship in Jagdalpur – Construction to begin in August;
* Koinonia fellowship in Lanja, Ratnagiri – Working on land purchase details, with construction to begin immediately after possession of land.
* Additionally, Koinonia Fellowship in Agra is having plastering of walls and construction of a roof to complete their building.

We have pieces of land in Pune, Manipur, and Orissa that are on the short list for construction in 2011.
* The cost of constructing a village church is $7000 to $10,000.
* The cost of constructing a town church is $10,000 to $15,000.
* The cost to construct a city church (like the one in Pune) is $25,000 to $30,000.

Koinonia Fellowship jeep in Pune

We want to begin to send teams to villages for evangelism where we are beginning a new work or where we have existing work. We are thankful for the vehicle the Lord provided in 2008 that we have to transport all the guests back and forth to the airport and for all the long trips to visit with churches. Our second jeep is 11 years old (and smaller) and is very tired and can only be used locally now. We are praying that the Lord would put on someone’s heart this particular need for another vehicle to be used to evangelize many “unreached” peoples of western and northern India. If you have a heart for evangelism and you want to see the Gospel go farther, this tool will help us take the gospel to hundreds and thousands in India.

Worshipers in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh

We continue to pray that hearts will be touched to financially support our Pastors in the field. This support enables these men and women to go to a village on a train or bus instead of walking, thus maximizing their time in reaching the many lost of India.

We have completed six years at the Koinonia School Of Ministry. Since 2004 we have seen men come and get trained and are now in the field pastoring churches. Our vision is to train men and women for ministry during these days at the college, to mold them in spiritual maturity and impart Bible knowledge to them in order to become capable ministers and leaders. We have seen tremendous growth, and by God’s grace have seen this vision flourish and become successful.

We teach not only the Word but also basics in “practical skilled trades”, such as: electrical work, carpentry, computer technology, plumbing, driving a car, painting, etc. These trades will help them earn the finances needed to live as they devote their lives to serving the Lord.

Current KSOM building

Personally this is my prayer for this year. We have been renting properties around Pune to house the School and Medical Clinic. We have in our possession about 8000 square feet of land. We had an architect design a 5 floor building which will accommodate our School of Ministry and even the Medical Clinic. The total building will be 9000 square feet. To construct each floor it will cost $50,000.00. Please pray with me to see this project through. We will no longer have to rent facilities and we never know when they will tell us to “vacate” with just 15 days notice. Those funds for rent can be invested into the Kingdom. (Note from Pastor Ben: Our current monthly costs are $1200 for KSOM + $400 for the medical clinic [neither includes utilities], and the owner of the KSOM building is asking for $200 more per month now.)

We are looking for Theological Study Books for our library. We can always use desktop and laptop computers. We have been praying for a copier and a good camera so we can upload pictures to our website.

Thank you for praying with us and for us. We fast and pray for all of you at Koinonia Rochester and everyone that is affiliated with the India Ministry. We are grateful and thankful for your lives, ministry, families, and your desire to bear this burden of the Lord. May the Lord bless you abundantly as you serve Him.

Pastor Joseph

News Update - May 2010

“As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” Proverbs 25:25

The Koinonia Medical Clinic in Pune treated 90 patients in March, some new and some returnees for follow-up. This outreach continues to grow, and Dr. Namrata has identified a need for medical equipment to enhance her ability to properly diagnose and treat the many patients she sees who are afflicted with heart problems and diabetes issues. Specialized breathing equipment is likewise needed to treat patients with asthma, which is also common even in the children. A $3000 grant has been awarded for the Koinonia Medical Clinic through St. John Fisher College in Rochester to obtain these necessary items. Praise the LORD for His faithful provision!!!

While in India in March, Pastor Ben met with a building designer to draw up plans for the development of the KSOM Campus. This has been an item of prayer for many years and, Lord willing, this may be the year we begin construction. The vision is ultimately for 8000 sq. feet of space (4 stories of 2000 sq. ft.) to include classrooms, dorms, sanctuary and kitchen. Currently building costs average $25.00 per sq. foot, but there is opportunity for painters and construction experts to come from the U.S. and volunteer to serve alongside the builders to offset some of the major costs, once the foundation has been laid.

Pastor Joseph traveled to Agra to encourage the flock of believers and to see that a roof was finally constructed (after several years without one) to finish the building for the saints there. Praise the LORD! In addition, church construction has been started for Pastor Arvind’s fellowship in Ratnagiri, as well as for Pastor Ayyub’s flock in Jagdalpur. What a wonderful blessing to see these buildings finally coming to pass after much prayer and tribulation. Now these faithful saints will have their own dedicated places in which to regularly meet and worship the Lord.

Should the Lord tarry, the Koinonia School of Ministry will begin a new session on June 1st. Pastor Joseph is prayerfully interviewing prospective students to select 12-14 new freshmen. There are currently 4 students planning to return for their second year. Let’s keep the students, staff, faculty and visiting pastors/professors in much prayer.

MARCH 2010 TRIP REPORT

by Pastor Ray

This Spring trip to India was quite different than the one in the Fall of 2009. Last fall we did much traveling throughout the nation, whereas on this visit we stayed right in the Chinchwad, Pune area where Pastor Ben’s home is. The first surprise for me was when our driver Nagesh showed up at the airport to pick me up. He speaks about 20 words of English and I speak about that many in Hindi, so as you can imagine, we had a wonderful conversation on the 3 hour trip home.

The evening of my arrival was Pastor Joseph’s 75th birthday party. It lasted from 9AM to 8PM, and that is not a typo! I was given the opportunity to preach the glorious gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ to an audience which were about one half unsaved Hindu friends or relatives of Joseph. There was some good response, so please pray for the seed sown.

The rest of the time was spent ministering to the Koinonia School of Ministry students. Pastor Ben taught them the difference between preaching and teaching and other Bible study methods. The students were really blessed, and Pastor Ben even gave them homework. I went through the entire book of Galatians with them. We were so blessed to learn of God’s grace through Christ and how we are complete in Him, apart from any works on our part. We also spent time looking into the work of The Holy Spirit in our evening devotions, and those were very special nights for all of us.

Of course one of the main focuses of this trip was our fifth graduation service, when 7 students - 5 young men and 2 young women - received their diplomas. All told now there are 29 KSOM graduates serving the Lord, either with the Koinonia churches of India or other denominations.

What a blessing to see the faces of these young people glow as they heard the exhortation to go into the entire world and preach the real Jesus to every creature!

Koinonia Missions Team Witnesses the Lord at Work in India

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:12

Vince, Pastor Charan, Steve, Ray, Larry and Ben

October was a historic and eventful month for the Koinonia Fellowship Church in India. Every couple of years pastors from around the country gather for a time of teaching, worship and fellowship. This year’s conference was the biggest ever, with over 70 pastors from 13 states travelling hundreds of miles to meet at Pastor Joseph’s and the Koinonia School of Ministry in Pune from October 17-21.

Pastor Ray, Pastor Ben and Pastor Larry Galletti of Calvary Chapel Twin Tiers taught on the conference’s theme: “Stewards of God’s Grace”, and there was plenty of opportunity to pray, sing, laugh and enjoy sweet fellowship in the Lord until late into the night. After the conference, the team from New York remained in Pune to teach at the school for several days. They will have a full report on their visit soon.

Before the conference began, the team had a chance to tour around the country and see for themselves the exciting work the Lord is doing in India. Joined by brothers Vince Santacesaria and Steve Morse, we visited six states where the local Koinonia pastors are preaching the Word and the Lord is bringing the increase. We brought back hours of video and pages of notes which we hope to use to spread the good news and make the flock in America aware of how we can direct our prayers and support to the areas with the greatest need and promise.

Diwali - Festival of Lights

The history of Diwali is replete with legends which are moored to the stories of Hindu religious scriptures, mostly the Puranas. Though the central theme of all the legends point to the classic truth of the victory of good over evil, the mode of their presentation and the characters differ. Diwali, being the festival of lights, signifies lighting the lamp of knowledge within us, and Hindus seek to understand and reflect upon the significant purpose of each of the five days of festivities and to bring those thoughts into day-to-day life.

Disastrous Cyclone hits India

Relief efforts in West Bengal
Relief efforts in West Bengal

On the 25th of May cyclone Aila hit the eastern Indian state of West Bengal and the neighboring country of Bangladesh. The cyclone hit the shores with 80MPH winds (similar to a category 3 hurricane) coming from the Bay of Bengal in the south and moved northwards. Resulting huge tidal waves from this severe storm also caused major flooding, damaging and destroying lives and properties.

Calcutta (now called Kolkata), the third most populous city in India with 15 million people, is located in West Bengal and was right in the storm’s path and was badly battered by the storm. Over all, nearly three hundred people died, with thousands more missing and millions left homeless. Nearly 600,000 homes were destroyed or damaged from the cyclone. Following the floods, epidemic outbursts of diarrhea and related diseases have also been reported.

THE “REAL” INDIA

By Ken Nawrocki

 Goats crossing road to Arungabad.
 Goats crossing road to Arungabad.

Let me start with some background on my experience in traveling to India. I visited New Delhi in 2008 on business and my thoughts were, “Incredible India” and passionate people. Now let me say that as an American businessman, the India I saw was largely limited to the airport, hotel, and a few restaurants; and my Xerox colleagues were intensely passionate about the business. However, my 2009 trip with Pastor Ray helped me see the “real India”, which was what Pastor Ben kept preparing me for! And what about India? It?s even more incredible than my original perspective from just one year ago! My experience was much richer for the opportunity to be with local people. I also observed zeal and passion for a much higher purpose. I had a chance to spend time with brothers and sisters who have a real desire and thirst to serve the Lord. And I got to hear many praise songs in Marathi!

SPRING MISSIONS TRIP

APRIL 13-25, 2009

Ken Nawrocki, Pastor Ben and Pastor Ray
Ken Nawrocki, Pastor Ben and Pastor Ray

Brother Ken Nawrocki and I were the Spring Koinonia Fellowship ministry team for 2009. The trip got off to a running start, literally, as our plane from Rochester landed a bit late in Atlanta, only to hear that ominous announcement that sends a chill down a flyer?s back: “Last boarding call for India flight 184 to Mumbai.” By the grace of God, we made it just in time, and then it was off to Mumbai! When we landed we got our luggage and then pro-ceeded to go to Customs, only to have a customs official direct Ken and me to go through the Senior Citizen?s lane!! When we got outside we were greeted by Pastor Joseph, Pastor Magar and our driver Nagash. What a joy it was to be back in India!
